The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2015 with Microsoft as MS15-116 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2503 since 03/19/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86823 (MS15-116: Security Update for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution (3104540)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110261 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-116)).

Applying the patch MS15-116 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
