Details
A vulnerability was found in libsndfile 1.0.25 (Audio Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component AIFF File Handler. The manipulation of the argument headindex with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in libsndfile 1.0.25 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via the headindex value in the header in an AIFF file.
The weakness was presented 11/17/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7805 since 10/09/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Marco Romano in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86891 (openSUSE Security Update : libsndfile (openSUSE-2015-742)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168243 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libsndfile (openSUSE-SU-2015:2119-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (38447), Tenable (86891), SecurityFocus (BID 77427†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54599†). See VDB-79264 for similar entry. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
