CloudBees Jenkins up to 1.637 CLI Subsystem commons-collections-*.jar Serialized command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in CloudBees Jenkins up to 1.637 (Continuous Integration Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing in the library webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/lib/commons-collections-*.jar of the component CLI Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability (Serialized). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Jenkins CLI subsystem in CloudBees Jenkins before 1.638 and LTS before 1.625.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted serialized Java object, related to a problematic webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/lib/commons-collections-*.jar file and the "Groovy variant in 'ysoserial'".

The weakness was published 11/25/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at wiki.jenkins-ci.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8103 since 11/09/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86898 (Jenkins < 1.638 / 1.625.2 Java Object Deserialization RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11549 (Jenkins Server Multiple Remote Security Vulnerabilities (Jenkins Security Advisory 2015-11-11)).

Upgrading to version 1.638 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21399.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (38983), Tenable (86898), SecurityFocus (BID 77636†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55501†). Similar entries are available at VDB-79315, VDB-79318, VDB-79319 and VDB-79320. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
