Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.6.4/2.7.2/2.8.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function jpeg2000_read_main_headers of the file libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c of the component SIZ Marker Handler. The manipulation as part of a JPEG 2000 Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The jpeg2000_read_main_headers function in libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c in FFmpeg before 2.6.5, 2.7.x before 2.7.3, and 2.8.x through 2.8.2 does not enforce uniqueness of the SIZ marker in a JPEG 2000 image, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds heap-memory access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted image with two or more of these markers.
The weakness was released 11/26/2015 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8363 since 11/26/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87178 (FreeBSD : ffmpeg -- multiple vulnerabilities (b0da85af-21a3-4c15-a137-fe9e4bc86002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176784 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1611-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.5, 2.7.3 or 2.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (108376), Tenable (87178), SecurityFocus (BID 78216†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57382†).
