The weakness was disclosed 12/08/2015 with Microsoft as MS15-127 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-6125 since 08/14/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 11/18/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87256 (MS15-127: Security Update for Microsoft Windows DNS to Address Remote Code Execution (3100465)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91131 (Microsoft Windows DNS Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-127)).

Applying the patch MS15-127 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
