Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 42 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component data URI Handler. The manipulation with the input value # leads to a input validation vulnerability (URL). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the

Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 mishandles the # (number sign) character in a data: URI, which allows remote attackers to spoof web sites via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 12/15/2015 by Abdulrahman Alqabandi (musicDespiteEverything) as MFSA2015-141 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7211 since 09/16/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
Security researcher Abdulrahman Alqabandi reported that when a data: URI is parsed, the hash ('#') symbol is incorrectly handled, allowing for spoofing attacks. This issue could result in the wrong URI being displayed as a location, which can mislead users to believe they are on a different site than the one loaded.
