Mozilla Firefox 42 nsDeque::GrowCapacity memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 42 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function nsDeque::GrowCapacity. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the nsDeque::GrowCapacity function in xpcom/glue/nsDeque.cpp in Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact by triggering a deque size change.

The weakness was disclosed 12/15/2015 by Ronald Crane as MFSA2015-144 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7221 since 09/16/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Security researcher Ronald Crane reported three buffer overflows affecting released code that were found through code inspection. They do not all have clear mechanisms to be exploited through web content but are vulnerable if a mechanism can be found to trigger them.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87385 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2c2d1c39-1396-459a-91f5-ca03ee7c64c6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124406 (Mozilla Firefox Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2015-134 and MFSA 2015-149)).

Upgrading to version 43 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87385), SecurityFocus (BID 79280†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55302†). The entries VDB-79805, VDB-79806, VDB-79807 and VDB-79808 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
