IBM Cognos Business Intelligence Apache Commons Collections Library InvokerTransformer code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence (Business Process Management Software) (unknown version). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function InvokerTransformer of the component Apache Commons Collections Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Serialized-object interfaces in certain IBM analytics, business solutions, cognitive, IT infrastructure, and mobile and social products allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a crafted serialized Java object, related to the InvokerTransformer class in the Apache Commons Collections library.

The weakness was released 01/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7450 since 09/29/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Python and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87171 (IBM WebSphere Java Object Deserialization RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124213 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Java UnSerialize Common-Collections Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (swg21970575)). This issue was added on 01/10/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 07/10/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (41613), Tenable (87171) and SecurityFocus (BID 77653†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-80031 and VDB-80032. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
