A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-umts_fp.c of the component UMTS FP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does

correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-umts_fp.c in the UMTS FP dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 does not properly reserve memory for channel ID mappings, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds memory access and application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 01/04/2016 by Buildbot Builder (Rick) (Website). The advisory is shared at code.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8713 since 01/03/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124748 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 5.6.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87824) and SecurityFocus (BID 79816†). The entries VDB-69583, VDB-69582, VDB-80055 and VDB-80056 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
