CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3. Affected by this issue is the function wdm_in_callback in the library cdc-wdm USB of the file drivers/usb/class/cdc-wdm.c of the component Linux Kernel. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2013-1860. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function wdm_in_callback in the library cdc-wdm USB of the file drivers/usb/class/cdc-wdm.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the wdm_in_callback function in drivers/usb/class/cdc-wdm.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.4 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted cdc-wdm USB device.

The weakness was published 03/12/2013 by Marcus Meissner with SuSE as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1860 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/06/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73198 (RHEL 6 : kernel (RHSA-2014:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167148 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:1138-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82855), Tenable (73198), SecurityFocus (BID 58510†), OSVDB (91422†) and Secunia (SA53191†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7911, VDB-8071 and VDB-8072. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
