The sandbox implementation in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT Gold and 8.1, and Windows 10 Gold and 1511 mishandles reparse points, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Windows Mount Point Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-0007.

The weakness was disclosed 01/12/2016 as MS16-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-0006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87881 (MS16-008: Security Update for Windows Kernel to Address Elevation of Privilege (3124605)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91149 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Privilege Escalation Vulnerabilities (MS16-008)).
