Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC DHCPD 4.0.x/4.1-ESV - 4.1-ESV-R12/4.1.x/4.2.x/4.3.0 - 4.3.3 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component IPv4 UDP Length Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
ISC DHCP 4.x before 4.1-ESV-R12-P1 and 4.2.x and 4.3.x before 4.3.3-P1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via an invalid length field in a UDP IPv4 packet. The advisory summarizes:
A server, client, or relay that is built to only be able to process unicast packets (i.e. those that have already been processed by the OS UDP/IP stack) is not affected, however this build configuration is not normally viable for clients and relays. Servers with this build configuration require a relay in order to be able to process DISCOVER and other broadcast requests from clients. Not all potentially-affected builds will actually be affected, but because it is difficult to identify or predict those which should be upgraded, our advice is that all builds should be considered vulnerable.
The weakness was shared 01/12/2016 by Sebastian Poehn with Sophos as AA-01334 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at kb.isc.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8605 since 12/16/2015. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87971 (Amazon Linux AMI : dhcp (ALAS-2016-637)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43511 (HPE ArubaOS Multiple Vulnerabilities (ARUBA-PSA-2016-007)).
Upgrading to version 4.1-ESV-R12-P1 or 4.3.3-P1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87971), SecurityFocus (BID 80703†), SecurityTracker (ID 1034657†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56297†).
