Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenStack up to 2015.1.2/5.0.0 (Cloud Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the file template-validate of the component Orchestration API. The manipulation with the input value file:///dev/zero leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The template-validate command in OpenStack Orchestration API (Heat) before 2015.1.3 (kilo) and 5.0.x before 5.0.1 (liberty) allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) or determine the existence of local files via the resource type in a template, as demonstrated by file:///dev/zero.
The weakness was disclosed 01/20/2016 with Red Hat (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5295 since 07/01/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89649 (Fedora 23 : openstack-heat-2015.1.2-2.fc23 (2016-fe5b9da308)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296002 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 9.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 2015.1.3 or 5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
