ntp 4.2.8p5 ntpq nextvar memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ntp 4.2.8p5 (Network Management Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function nextvar of the component ntpq. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The nextvar function in NTP before 4.2.8p6 and 4.3.x before 4.3.90 does not properly validate the length of its input, which allows an attacker to cause a denial of service (application crash).

The weakness was released 01/19/2016 as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is available at support.ntp.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7975 since 10/23/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88054 (Network Time Protocol Daemon (ntpd) 3.x / 4.x < 4.2.8p6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196593 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Ntp Vulnerabilities (USN-3096-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (110020), Tenable (88054), SecurityFocus (BID 81959†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56271†).
