Mozilla developers and community identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88419 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2016:0071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157140 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for thunderbird (ELSA-2016-0258)).

Upgrading to version 44 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
