A vulnerability was found in libEBML up to 1.3.2. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function EbmlUnicodeString::UpdateFromUTF8 of the component UTF-8 String Handler. The EbmlUnicodeString::UpdateFromUTF8 function in libEBML before 1.3.3 allows context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information from process heap memory via a crafted UTF-8 string, which triggers an invalid memory access.
The weakness was presented 01/29/2016 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8790 since 01/29/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
