A vulnerability was found in Prosody up to 0.9.9 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function generate_dialback of the component mod_dialback. The generate_dialback function in the mod_dialback module in Prosody before 0.9.10 does not properly separate fields when generating dialback keys, which allows remote attackers to spoof XMPP network domains via a crafted stream id and domain name that is included in the target domain as a suffix.
The weakness was published 01/29/2016 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.prosody.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-0756 since 12/15/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88466 (FreeBSD : prosody -- user impersonation vulnerability (50394bc9-c5fa-11e5-96a5-d93b343d1ff7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124680 (Fedora Security Update for prosody (FEDORA-2016-e2c5111eda)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
