Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.8-S4 (Domain Name Software). This affects an unknown function of the file rdataset.c of the component Query Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
rdataset.c in ISC BIND 9 Supported Preview Edition 9.9.8-S before 9.9.8-S5, when nxdomain-redirect is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (REQUIRE assertion failure and daemon exit) via crafted flag values in a query.
The weakness was disclosed 02/04/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-1284 since 01/03/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88716 (ISC BIND 9.9.8-Sx < 9.9.8-S5 REQUIRE Assertion DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15003 (ISC BIND "rdataset.c" Denial of Service Vulnerability (AA-01348)).
Upgrading to version 9.9.8-S5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
