Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0. This affects an unknown function of the file net/unix/af_unix.c of the component File Descriptor Limit Handler. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4312. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file net/unix/af_unix.c of the component File Descriptor Limit Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Linux kernel before 4.4.1 allows local users to bypass file-descriptor limits and cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by sending each descriptor over a UNIX socket before closing it, related to net/unix/af_unix.c and net/unix/garbage.c.
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2016 by Tetsuo Handa (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security-tracker.debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4312 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87995 (Debian DSA-3448-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 256020 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2016:0855)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87995), SecurityFocus (BID 82986†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56441†). The entries VDB-68573, VDB-76938, VDB-79331 and VDB-80796 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
