Windows Reader in Microsoft Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Reader file, aka "Microsoft Windows Reader Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 02/09/2016 with Microsoft as MS16-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-0046 since 12/03/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91162 (Microsoft Windows PDF Library Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-012)).
Applying the patch MS16-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20823.
