WinForms in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, and 4.6.1 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via crafted icon data, aka "Windows Forms Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 02/09/2016 with Microsoft as MS16-019 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-0047 since 12/04/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88651 (MS16-019: Security Update for .NET Framework to Address Denial of Service (3137893)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91167 (Microsoft .NET Framework Denial of Service And Information Disclosure Vulnerabilities (MS16-019)).
Applying the patch MS16-019 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
