A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Debian dpkg up to 1.16.3. This affects the function write_pidfile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was released 06/04/2012 by Carsten Hey as 675918 as not defined bug report (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.debian.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
