A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function opj_pi_update_decode_poc of the file pi.c of the component OpenJPEG. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The opj_pi_update_decode_poc function in pi.c in OpenJPEG, as used in PDFium in Google Chrome before 48.0.2564.109, miscalculates a certain layer index value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted PDF document.
The weakness was published 02/14/2016 by Mariusz Mlynski with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at codereview.chromium.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1626 since 01/11/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
