A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpMyAdmin up to 4.0.10.12/4.4.15.2/4.5.3 (Database Administration Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file libraries/session.inc.php of the component CSRF Token Generator. libraries/session.inc.php in phpMyAdmin 4.0.x before 4.0.10.13, 4.4.x before 4.4.15.3, and 4.5.x before 4.5.4 does not properly generate CSRF token values, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by predicting a value.
The weakness was presented 02/20/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2039 since 01/21/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175793 (Debian Security Update for phpmyadmin (DSA 3627-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.10.13, 4.4.15.3 or 4.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
