A vulnerability has been found in Moodle up to 2.6.11/2.7.9/2.8.7/2.9.1 (Learning Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function mt_rand in the library lib/moodlelib.php of the component Password Recovery Token Generator. lib/moodlelib.php in Moodle through 2.6.11, 2.7.x before 2.7.10, 2.8.x before 2.8.8, and 2.9.x before 2.9.2 relies on the PHP mt_rand function to implement the random_string and complex_random_string functions, which makes it easier for remote attackers to predict password-recovery tokens via a brute-force approach.
The weakness was shared 02/22/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at moodle.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5267 since 07/01/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. Upgrading to version 2.7.8, 2.8.8 or 2.9.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
