Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Nettle up to 3.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ecc_256_modq of the file ecc-256.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ecc_256_modq function in ecc-256.c in Nettle before 3.2 does not properly handle carry propagation and produces incorrect output in its implementation of the P-256 NIST elliptic curve, which allows attackers to have unspecified impact via unknown vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-8803.
The weakness was presented 02/23/2016 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.lysator.liu.se. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8805 since 02/01/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2022). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88771 (openSUSE Security Update : libnettle (openSUSE-2016-211)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236153 (Red Hat Update for nettle (RHSA-2016:2582)).
Upgrading to version 3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.lysator.liu.se. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88771), SecurityFocus (BID 84272†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56877†). See VDB-81071, VDB-81072 and VDB-99885 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
