Summary
A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel. The affected element is an unknown function of the file fs/aio.c of the component AIO Interface. Performing a manipulation results in integer overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8830. The attack needs to be approached locally. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality of the file fs/aio.c of the component AIO Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 03/01/2016 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8830 since 03/01/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:
static ssize_t aio_setup_single_vector(struct kiocb *kiocb)
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91090 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux-lts-utopic vulnerabilities (USN-2969-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157849 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2018-3083)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
static ssize_t aio_setup_single_vector(int type, struct file * file, struct kiocb *kiocb)
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (111186), Tenable (91090) and SecurityFocus (BID 103960†). See VDB-81152, VDB-81363, VDB-81364 and VDB-81365 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
