Web Server in Apple OS X Server before 5.1 does not properly restrict access to .DS_Store and .htaccess files, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive configuration information via an HTTP request.

The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2016 as HT206173 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1776 since 01/13/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:

A file access issue existed in Apache with .DS_Store and .htaccess files. This issue was addressed through improved access restrictions.

Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
