WebKit in Apple iOS before 9.3 and Safari before 9.1 allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and obtain physical-location data via a crafted geolocation request.
The weakness was disclosed 03/18/2016 by xisigr as HT206171 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1779 since 01/12/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. An issue existed in the parsing of geolocation requests. This was addressed through improved validation of the security origin for geolocation requests.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124837 (Apple Safari 9.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-6)).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
