A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component apache_mod_php. The manipulation as part of a PNG File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2016 by Glenn Randers-Pehrson as HT206167 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8472 since 12/03/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in libpng versions prior to 1.6.20. These were addressed by updating libpng to version 1.6.20.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88692 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : java-1_8_0-ibm (SUSE-SU-2016:0390-1) (SLOTH)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350087 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libpng: ALAS-2015-615).
Upgrading to version 10.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88692) and SecurityFocus (BID 78624†). The entries VDB-80609, VDB-81428, VDB-81430 and VDB-81431 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
