Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the kernel in Apple iOS before 9.3 and OS X before 10.11.4 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context via a crafted app.
The weakness was published 03/21/2016 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT206167 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1757 since 01/12/2016. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A race condition existed during the creation of new processes. This was addressed through improved state handling.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90096 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
