Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple iOS up to 9.2 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The kernel in Apple iOS before 9.3 and OS X before 10.11.4 allows attackers to obtain sensitive memory-layout information or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted app.
The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2016 as HT206166 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1758 since 01/13/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
An out-of-bounds read issue existed that led to the disclosure of kernel memory. This was addressed through improved input validation.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90096 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124842 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.4 and Security Update 2016-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-5)).
Upgrading to version 9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44239), Tenable (90096), SecurityFocus (BID 71820†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57597†). The entries VDB-68484, VDB-73556, VDB-81414 and VDB-81421 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
