MIT Kerberos up to 1.13.4/1.14.1 kadmin ldap_principal2.c process_db_args DB null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 1.13.4/1.14.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function process_db_args in the library plugins/kdb/ldap/libkdb_ldap/ldap_principal2.c of the component kadmin. The manipulation of the argument DB with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The process_db_args function in plugins/kdb/ldap/libkdb_ldap/ldap_principal2.c in the LDAP KDB module in kadmind in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) through 1.13.4 and 1.14.x through 1.14.1 mishandles the DB argument, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted request to modify a principal.

The weakness was disclosed 03/26/2016 by Andrej Nemec as Bug 1319616 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-3119 since 03/11/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97023 (Amazon Linux AMI : krb5 (ALAS-2017-793)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157284 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for krb5 (ELSA-2016-2591)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 12 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24268.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (111772), Tenable (97023), SecurityFocus (BID 85392†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57778†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
