Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in PostgreSQL. This impacts an unknown function of the component Connection Request Handler. The manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2013-1899. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Connection Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Argument injection vulnerability in PostgreSQL 9.2.x before 9.2.4, 9.1.x before 9.1.9, and 9.0.x before 9.0.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (file corruption), and allows remote authenticated users to modify configuration settings and execute arbitrary code, via a connection request using a database name that begins with a "-" (hyphen).
The weakness was released 04/04/2013 by Marko Kreen as 1028387 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitytracker.com. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1899 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69737 (Amazon Linux AMI : postgresql9 (ALAS-2013-178)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350568 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql9: ALAS-2013-178).
Upgrading to version 9.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69737), SecurityFocus (BID 58876†), OSVDB (91962†), Secunia (SA52837†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028387†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-8167, VDB-8168, VDB-8169 and VDB-8170. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
