Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 3.3.8 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function VIDEO_SET_SPU_PALETTE of the file fs/compat_ioctl.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The do_video_set_spu_palette function in fs/compat_ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 3.6.5 on unspecified architectures lacks a certain error check, which might allow local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted VIDEO_SET_SPU_PALETTE ioctl call on a /dev/dvb device.
The weakness was presented 10/25/2012 by Kees Cook as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1928 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66431 (Debian DSA-2668-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156722 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2013-1645)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83853), Tenable (66431), OSVDB (92021†), Secunia (SA53411†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41791†). See VDB-7933, VDB-7934, VDB-8485 and VDB-8484 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
