iPlanet CMS path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in iPlanet CMS (Content Management System) (version unknown). This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was presented 10/26/2000 by Emiliano Kargieman and Agustín Kato Azubel with Core (Website). The advisory is shared at www1.corest.com. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5421), SecurityFocus (BID 1839†) and OSVDB (486†). See VDB-16094 for similar entry. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
