Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in the kernel in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that leverages improper handling of objects in memory, aka "Kernel Race Condition Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 04/09/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Inc. as MS13-031 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1294 since 01/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65878 (MS13-031: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2813170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90878 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Multiple Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS13-031)).
Applying the patch MS13-031 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83091), Tenable (65878), OSVDB (92125†), Secunia (SA52916†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028403†). The entry VDB-8201 is pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
