A vulnerability was found in InspIRCd up to 2.0.18 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function DNS::GetResult of the file dns.cpp of the component DNS PTR Response Handler. The manipulation of the argument hostname with the input value \032 leads to a input validation vulnerability (Split). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The DNS::GetResult function in dns.cpp in InspIRCd before 2.0.19 allows remote DNS servers to cause a denial of service (netsplit) via an invalid character in a PTR response, as demonstrated by a "\032" (whitespace) character in a hostname.
The weakness was published 04/12/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8702 since 12/28/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
