Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Cisco IOS XE up to 3.5 (Router Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Bridge Domain Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Cisco IOS XE 3.2 through 3.4 before 3.4.2S, and 3.5, on 1000 series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR), when bridge domain interface (BDI) is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (card reload) via packets that are not properly handled during the processing of encapsulation, aka Bug ID CSCtt11558.

The weakness was released 04/10/2013 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20130410-asr1000 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1167 since 01/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67218 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco IOS XE Software for 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (cisco-sa-20130410-asr1000)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.

Upgrading to version 3.4.2S eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at tools.cisco.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
