A vulnerability was found in dotCMS up to 3.5.0 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument fileName with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the dotTailLogServlet in dotCMS before 3.5.1 allows remote authenticated administrators to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the fileName parameter.

The weakness was presented 04/18/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3972 since 04/07/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
