Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.50 (Web Server). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component mod_ssl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 09/13/2004 by M. "Alex" Hankins with Apache Team as Bug 30134 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0488 since 05/24/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14516 (GLSA-200406-05 : Apache: Buffer overflow in mod_ssl), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86814 (Apache 2.0 HTTP Server mod_ssl Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cvs.apache.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3464.
