A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OpenSSH up to 7.2p2 (Connectivity Software). This vulnerability affects the function do_setup_env of the file session.c. The manipulation of the argument LD_PRELOAD as part of a Environment Variable leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. The do_setup_env function in session.c in sshd in OpenSSH through 7.2p2, when the UseLogin feature is enabled and PAM is configured to read .pam_environment files in user home directories, allows local users to gain privileges by triggering a crafted environment for the /bin/login program, as demonstrated by an LD_PRELOAD environment variable.
The weakness was disclosed 05/01/2016 by Shayan Sadigh (Website). The advisory is available at security-tracker.debian.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8325 since 11/24/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91413 (openSUSE Security Update : openssh (openSUSE-2016-668)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168872 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for openssh (SUSE-SU-2016:1386-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
