Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark 2.0.0/2.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file wiretap/vwr.c of the component Ixia IxVeriWave File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
wiretap/vwr.c in the Ixia IxVeriWave file parser in Wireshark 2.x before 2.0.2 incorrectly increases a certain octet count, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow and application crash) via a crafted file.
The weakness was presented 05/01/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4415 since 04/30/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
