Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.3-9/7.0.1 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component HTTP/FTP Coder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) HTTP and (2) FTP coders in ImageMagick before 6.9.3-10 and 7.x before 7.0.1-1 allow remote attackers to conduct server-side request forgery (SSRF) attacks via a crafted image.
The weakness was released 05/05/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.imagemagick.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3718 since 03/30/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Nikolay Ermishkin and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
