Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 10.0 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in Mozilla Firefox before the Preview Release, Mozilla before 1.7.3, and Thunderbird before 0.8 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or execute arbitrary code via (1) the "Send page" functionality, (2) certain responses from a malicious POP3 server, or (3) a link containing a non-ASCII hostname.
The weakness was presented 09/14/2004 by Mats Palmgren and Gael Delalleau as Bug 256316 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0902 since 09/23/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at bugzilla.mozilla.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14729 (Mozilla < 1.7.3 / Thunderbird < 0.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
