A vulnerability has been found in Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.1.67/5.5.29 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Server XML. Oracle MySQL 5.1.67 and earlier and 5.5.29 and earlier, and MariaDB 5.5.28a and possibly other versions, allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (mysqld crash) via a SELECT command with an UpdateXML command containing XML with a large number of unique, nested elements.

The weakness was published 04/16/2013 by kingcope as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5614 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69746 (Amazon Linux AMI : mysql55 (ALAS-2013-187)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350560 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for mysql51: ALAS-2013-186).
