A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.50 (Web Server). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part in the library apr-util of the component IPv6 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. Buffer overflow in Apache 2.0.50 and earlier allows local users to gain apache privileges via a .htaccess file that causes the overflow during expansion of environment variables.
The weakness was presented 09/15/2004 by Ulf Harnhammar with NISCC (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at uniras.gov.uk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0747 since 07/26/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14766 (GLSA-200409-21 : Apache 2, mod_dav: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86678 (Multiple Apache Web Server Vulnerabilities prior to version 2.0.51).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
