It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function SYSENTER of the component EFLAGS Register. The manipulation of the argument NT with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Xen 3.1 through 4.x, when running 64-bit hosts on Intel CPUs, does not clear the NT flag when using an IRET after a SYSENTER instruction, which allows PV guest users to cause a denial of service (hypervisor crash) by triggering a #GP fault, which is not properly handled by another IRET instruction.
The weakness was presented 04/18/2013 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1917 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66985 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : Xen (SAT Patch Number 7798)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166818 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2014:0411-1)).
Applying the patch xsa44 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83646), Tenable (66985), SecurityFocus (BID 59291†), OSVDB (92564†) and Secunia (SA53023†).
