Cisco IOS SNMP Query memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS (Router Operating System) (version now known) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SNMP Query Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The generic input/output control implementation in Cisco IOS does not properly manage buffers, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (device reload) by sending many SNMP requests at the same time, aka Bug ID CSCub41105.

The weakness was presented 04/19/2013 with Cisco as 29048 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1217 since 01/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66202 (Cisco IOS Generic Input/Output SNMP DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting no snmp-server. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (66202), SecurityFocus (BID 59357†), OSVDB (92633†), Secunia (SA53172†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39297†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
