A vulnerability was found in YACS (affected version not known) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file tables/populate.php. The manipulation of the argument context[path_to_root] with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in articles/article.php in Yet Another Community System (YACS) CMS 6.6.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a URL in the context[path_to_root] parameter.
The weakness was disclosed 08/29/2006 by matasanos (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at yetanothercommunitysystem.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4532 since 09/01/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by MATASANOS and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:tables/populate.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (2282), OSVDB (31308†), Secunia (SA21680†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1016775†). The entries VDB-32104, VDB-32077, VDB-84941 and VDB-84942 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
